Homeowners Digging In: Regional Trends Shape Stay-Put Decisions

TL;DR: A new survey indicates many homeowners are staying put, but how this trend impacts renovations and installations varies significantly by US region.

Last updated: September 24, 2026

A recent survey by Trex suggests a prevailing sentiment among homeowners: they are choosing to stay in their current homes rather than move. This "stay-put" phenomenon, driven by various economic and lifestyle factors, has significant implications for the home improvement industry, particularly for services like sliding door installation. However, the impact of this trend isn't uniform across the country. In regions with historically high housing costs, such as the Northeast and parts of California, homeowners may be opting for renovations to improve their existing spaces rather than facing prohibitive mortgage rates or limited inventory. This could translate to increased demand for upgrades that enhance living areas and boost functionality. Conversely, in more affordable regions, such as the Midwest and parts of the South, homeowners might have more flexibility. While some may still choose to renovate, others could be leveraging lower property values to upgrade to larger homes, potentially leading to a different mix of installation needs. The focus here might shift from aesthetic improvements to functional additions or replacements. In areas experiencing rapid population growth or economic booms, like Texas or the Mountain West, the decision to stay put could be less about affordability and more about lifestyle preferences or the desire to avoid the disruption of moving. This could fuel demand for projects that enhance outdoor living spaces, a natural fit for sliding door installations that connect indoor and outdoor environments. This national trend of homeowners remaining in place means a renewed focus on making existing homes more comfortable, functional, and aesthetically pleasing. For those in Fort Worth and the surrounding areas looking to maximize their current living space with new sliding doors, understanding the local market and obtaining installation quotes is a practical next step.
